Whippet - Ruby

Meet Ruby! Ruby is a sweet 13 year old Whippet. She was adopted by her parents as a very young puppy, so tiny that she fit into a mixing bowl. Initially Ruby’s adoptive mum hand fed her with puppy milk and wrapped her in a shawl to keep her warm and close to her body for comfort. Ruby’s mum reminisces that she looked like a joey in a pouch – all legs.
Ruby has matured into a beautiful and gentle Whippet. She loves her food, especially roast chicken! As she has aged she has had a few teeth removed and so softer foods are preferred by her. During her Furever Photos photo shoot, we learnt that Ruby has some interesting traits – one of which is to eat only one half of her food at a time. She eats exactly half of her food from her bowl, favouring one side in particular. Once that half is eaten, she likes her bowl to be turned so she can finish the other half on her preferred side.
In her younger years, Ruby once tried social Whippet Racing however she was so focused on her mum that she stopped halfway through the race to look for her on the sidelines. Although she is now 13, Ruby still enjoys a sprint from time to time.

A bit about Whippets
Traditionally Whippets were bread for hunting – especially rabbits. Now they are perfectly suited to compete in activities such as agility, flyball, and obedience. They are also used as therapy dogs due to their quiet and calm nature – they rarely bark. Whippets have high energy and although they can be suited to apartment living, they do need lots of opportunities to exercise as they are built to run!
They make wonderful companion dogs and need to be with their people to stay happy. They are certainly not outdoor pets and can easily become cold, so jackets, especially in winter are a must. Because they have a strong prey drive, they are best not be be in the same household as small pets.
Whippets are generally a healthy breed, however they can be prone to developing dental disease, so regular cleaning is important.
As with every dog breed, training, socialisation, exercise and mental stimulation is critical to having a calm and happy Whippet.
